LP John the Revelator – Wild Blues (their first album from 1970)

Back in 1970 the Dutch blues band John the Revelator won the prestigious Loosdrecht Jazz Concours. Record label Decca immediately offered them a recording contract, which resulted in the release of the legendary album Wild Blues. It was recorded at the Phonogram studio with producer Tony Vos, who had a great track record with bands like Cuby + Blizzards, Ekseption and the Oscar Benton Blues Band.

At that time John the Revelator had grown into a seven-piece band. They had just two days to record the album and one evening to mix it. Most tracks were done in two or three takes, with a bare minimum of overdubs: just vocals and horns.  

Wild Blues has since become a highly sought-after collectors’ item. This deluxe 180 gram audiophile vinyl LP set presents the original album in its entirety, plus two extra songs: the instrumental Yeah and the (in 1971) recorded B-side of a never released single: One Track Mind, all dynamically mastered from the original tapes.

The gatefold sleeve features restored cover art, along with rare archival photos and liner notes. John the Revelator is still alive and kicking and has been on the road now for 45 years. They play all over Europe and toured Australia.

In 1970 won de Nederlandse bluesgroep John the Revelator het prestigieuze Loosdrecht Jazz Concours. Platenlabel Decca bood hen onmiddellijk een contract aan, wat resulteerde in de release van het legendarische Wild Blues. Het album werd opgenomen in de Phonogram studio, onder leiding van producer Tony Vos. Die had een imposante staat van dienst, met bands als Cuby + Blizzards, Ekseption en de Oscar Benton Blues Band.

 In die tijd was John the Revelator uitgegroeid tot een zeven mans formatie. Het gezelschap had slechts twee dagen om de hele lp op te nemen en een avond om hem te mixen. De meeste songs zijn in twee of drie takes op band gezet, met een minimum aan overdubs: alleen zang en blazers. 

Wild Blues is sinds die tijd uitgegroeid tot een waar collectors’ item. Deze luxe 180 grams vinyl lp presenteert het originele album, aangevuld met twee extra songs: het instrumentale Yeah and de (in 1971) opgenomen B-kant van een nooit uitgebrachte single: One Track Mind. Alle songs zijn dynamisch geremasterd van de originele tapes.

De uitklaphoes bevat het gerenoveerde artwork, samen met zeldzame archieffoto’s en liner notes. John the Revelator is nog steeds ‘alive and kicking’ en toert al 45 jaar door heel Europa en zelfs Australië.
